One of the big news pieces coming out of Washington, as the election nears, is the appearance of President Obama on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. CNN has reported that this appearance has been lauded by the White House as a big success in that the President accomplished his goal, which was to reach out to the young, college demographic to come out and vote in the Midterm elections. The fear, at least for the Democrats was and to some extent still is, that the demographic that got them the presidency in 2008, could sit out this election, and thus, the party would lose key seats.
Regarding some of the senate races the latest polls show that in Connecticut the race is dead even between Democrat Dan Malloy and Republican Tom Foley (45%-45%), while in California Democrat Jerry Brown has opened up a ten-point lead over Republican Meg Whitman (49%-39%).
In the hotly contested Kentucky race a CNN/Time Poll has reported that Republican nominee Rand Paul is holding a seven point lead over Democrat nominee Jack Conway (50%-43%). Another piece of news coming out of Kentucky was the "Kentucky Stomping" where some supporters of Rand Paul tackled a MoveOn.org volunteer to the ground and one person started stomping on her head and shoulders outside a debate between Rand Paul and Jack Conway. The woman, identified as Lauren Valle, 23, was pushed to the ground -- her blond wig was pulled off in the scuffle -- and then held down. One man shouted for the police, but another -- later identified as Paul volunteer, Tim Profitt -- stepped on Valle's shoulder and then stomped down, his foot hitting her head. He backed off when someone else told him to stop. Valle stayed on the ground, motionless.
